Eye To Eye

We really wanted to focus on writing great songs and once we had the backbone of that we could embellish things in whatever way we felt fit. That way behind all the guitar distortion and heavy drums you could play the songs on an acoustic guitar and they could still stand up on their own. So, for example, if we felt like strings or keyboard would work in a song then we should put it in. Which we did. We still like to keep our sound real and not too over-produced, but we did put more layers on than the previous albums, though each part really has a place. Our voices have been a huge step forward for us as we are really learning every day about how to sing better and how our voices complement each other. AM: Given you have more layers and production going on this time — how will it translate live? LMC: Like I said, the backbone of each song is there without the production, so it will be a more stripped back version live. We will not be using backing tracks or have extra members, which is something we feel very strongly about. At the moment we are rehearsing the songs, and although there is a lot more to think about for both of us, I think there are ways we can work it out.

On their first two albums, the U. With their latest, ‘In Time to Voices,’ released earlier this year, they still kick plenty of butt — only this time, guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansell unleash their angst with more delicacy and pop sheen. Formed in , Blood Red Shoes have played to festival crowds throughout Europe, but despite their winning combination of hooks and looks — they’re every bit as photogenic as their counterparts in the similarly equipped Kills — they’ve yet to break through in America.

Chatting with Diffuser. He also weighed in on the prevalence of two-piece rock bands, the mystery of lyrics and the genius of Fleetwood Mac. You’re in Brighton.

Brighton, England’s Blood Red Shoes features Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell, two enthusiastic punk-inspired brawlers who channel the clamor of Yeah.

After years of a constant release-tour-release cycle, Blood Red Shoes decided they were sick of the sight of each other back in In classic rock band style, the sibling duo separated in order to find themselves. For singer-guitarist Laura-Mary Carter, this involved getting on a one-way flight to the USA and writing songs for pop producers. There’s an old Scottish phrase “gang aft agley” which roughly translates as “often go wrong”. One thing we know for sure, albums written by bands in conflict fucking rule.

Pressing shuffle and landing on Blood Red Shoes is equivalent to taking a shot of whiskey. You may think that you didn’t need it, but turns out you did. Steven Ansel’s drums bang out heavy rhythms, Laura Mary-Carter’s guitar cleaves, and both members sing. New album Get Tragic coming after a five-year gap is royal.

Blood Red Shoes Biography

Blood Red Shoes are an alternative rock duo from Brighton, England. They have released two full-length albums, Box of Secrets and Fire Like This , plus a slew of early singles on limited 7″ vinyl pressings. The band frequently distance themselves from current English guitar music and consider themselves to be a punk band, in ethos and attitude, if not in their immediate musical style.

Laura-Mary Carter spikes full-blooded Marshall power with boutique Fender vibes. With fellow bandmate Steven Ansell holding it down on drums, Laura-Mary fills the band’s Stay up to date with the latest gear and tuition.

Why did you — instead of many bands — decide to have such small album-circles of most of the times only years in between records? Well it never really felt like a conscious decision to be honest, we just kept doing what we were doing and we never really stopped to reflect. It just seemed like what you were supposed to do, plus also we had a lot of energy and whenever we stopped touring we felt really down and missed it so we instinctively went back to it quickly.

What had happened? We hit a wall. I call it our mid-life crisis phase. We talked about breaking up, about changing the name, about starting a new band with a different line up and a different style, we fired almost everyone who worked for us. Well we played a little bit here and there but the most important thing was we had time apart. We both got to discover ourselves outside of being part of the machinery of the band. We both did a lot of music, Laura-Mary went to california and travelled a lot and wrote a lot of solo material which is very atmospheric americana-tinged songs, and I spent a lot of time producing other artists and ended up gravitating much more towards electronic and hip hop music.

It was great because for the first time in ages, when we came back together to write, we were surprising and testing each other and it felt like we were getting out of our usual habits. What did you want to change to reconnect? And she was totally right!

Distance is sometimes necessary. After a never-ending rollercoaster cycle of album-tour-album-tour-and repeat reached its climax with ‘s self-titled record, the duo behind Blood Red Shoes were exhausted. Four years elapsed, and it seemed that might be that for the Brighton band. However, last year brought a reunion at The Great Escape as well as two banging surprise singles. How does it feel? Yeah, we’re back… I was talking about it with my friend; it’s really weird.

When they first burst onto the indie-rock scene back in , Brighton-duo Blood Red Shoes were like a breath of fresh air. Debut album Box Of Secrets sounds as brilliantly devilish now as it did at the time and the band followed it up with the more expansive but equally-impressive Fire Like This. The band recently returned with their third LP, the brilliant In Time To Voices, which has again singled them out as one of the finest bands this country currently has to offer.
